What is VoIP?
Voice Over IP (VoIP) is a technology that allows voice traffic (for example, telephone calls and faxes) to be transmitted over a IP network, such as the public internet. Using VoIP and, usually, a broadband internet connection (cable modem or DSL), it is possible to use a broad range of equipment to make telephone calls over the net.

An intermediary (either hardware or software) is needed to translate back and forth between an analog stream (i.e. your voice) and the digital packets which are transmitted over a network. Recent advances allow for VoIP to connect directly to the basic PSTN telephone system so that internet calls can be made to any phone number in the world.

Where can I use VoIP?
Anywhere you have a high-speed connection, just plug in your analog telephone adapter (ATA) device.

How Can I Place a VoIP Call?
Depending on the service, you can place a VoIP call by picking up your phone and dialing the number. An adaptor connects the phone to your existing high-speed Internet connection. The call goes over the Internet to your VoIP service provider and then on to a local telephone company.

Another way to place a VoIP phone call is using a microphone and headset plugged into your computer. The number is placed using the keyboard or an internet IP phone and is routed through your computer and on to your cable modem.

What Kind of Equipment Do I Need?
A broadband (high-speed Internet) connection. This can be a cable Modem or a high speed service such as DSL or a Local Area network (LAN).

A home router to share your broadband connection (such as Netgear, Linksys, or D-Link, etc). A home router is a device that allows you to share your Internet connection with multiple computers or devices. Many of these home routers cost as little as $30.00 to $50.00 and allow you to have a home network in minutes.

To place a call into the regular (PSTN) phone network you will need a VoIP service provider. The Analog Telephone Adaptor (ATA) which will be provided by the VoIP company. The ATA device, shipped to you once you sign up for service, turns your Internet connection into a phone network. If you are using this device with a home router, you just plug it into the network and turn it on to get started.

Or you can hook up an inexpensive microphone to your computer and send your voice through your computer and its high-speed Internet connection.

How well will VoIP work at my home or office?
The voice quality of VoIP is dependent on the speed and quality of your internet connection. We recommended testing your internet connection using
www.testmyvoip.com before deciding whether VoIP will work well in your home or business.

We also suggest running the test several times using the farthest "test city" available from your area. If you consistently receive a 3.5 or higher score, you probably will be satisfied using any Voice-over IP service.

How fast does my internet connection need to be?
The average DSL or cable connection is usually sufficient. VoIP will not work with a dial-up connection. We recommend you check your connection speed here to determine the quality of your connection.
Test my VoIP.

Is There a Difference Between Making a Local Call and a Long-Distance Call?
Call charges vary from plan to plan. Some VoIP service providers offer unlimited long-distance in which case the call is free. Other VoIP providers offer unlimited long distance within a large calling area like USA and Canada and charge for international calls at a very small rate per minute. But as far as the actual dialing of the call goes think of it like a regular phone. Just pick up the phone and dial.

Also note that your VoIP service provider may permit you to select an area code different from the area in which you live. This means you may not incur long-distance charges if you call a number in your area code regardless of geography. It also means people who call you may incur long-distance charges depending on their area code and service.

Some VoIP service providers offer their basis service for nothing, normally they are providers who provide computer to computer calls.

If I have VoIP Service, Who Can I Call?
Most VoIP service providers allow you to call any phone number in the world. This could be a local number, a cell phone, a long-distance number or an international number. However, some computer based providers might limit you to other subscribers to the service. Except for Skype and Net2phone, this website focuses on providers that allow you to call to the regular phone network so you will be able to call any phone number. The person you are calling does not need any special equipment, just a phone.

What Are Some Advantages of VoIP?
  • Long distance is part of a flat rate service or a fraction of what you would pay a regular PSTN provider. Therefore if you make expensive long distance phone calls and want to minimize costs this is an excellent solution.
  • If you have a broadband Internet connection, you need not maintain and pay the additional cost for a traditional phone line just to make telephone calls.
  • With many VoIP plans you can talk for as long as you want with any person in the world (the requirement is that the other person has a Internet connection).
  • Ability to take your number anywhere in the world.
  • Other features like conference calling, choice of any area code, voice mail, call forwarding, caller ID, call waiting, call detail records, voice mail to email, etc. Most of these features are just not possible with a traditional phone.

What Are Some Disadvantages of VoIP?
If you are considering replacing your traditional telephone service with VoIP, there are some possible differences:
  • The main drawback is the need for a reliable broadband connection.
  • Since VoIP requires a live Internet connection, losing electricity means losing your phone service. If you are concerned about losing power, you could install a UPS for your cable/DSL modem and your ATA. Even a small UPS would keep those devices powered for several hours. Alternatively, you could keep a single phone line with no premium services as a lifeline for those times that you might lose your power or Internet connection.
  • Emergency 911 calls are another challenge for VoIP telephony, because it's difficult to determine the exact location of a IP address with geographic certainty. Without knowing the exact location, it's also difficult to determine which call center should receive a VoIP-originated 911 call (though most VoIP providers do have 911 call routing based on the address you used when you registered).
  • VoIP providers may or may not offer directory assistance/white page listings.
  • The voice quality of your VoIP call is also another consideration. Since the data travels across the Internet, there is the potential for dropouts or "burbles" similar to what you might experience on a cell phone. What significantly improves this is well managed IP networks, used by most of the VoIP service providers, coupled with quality of service (QOS) mechanisms built into their ATAs, and a high-quality compression algorithm yields call quality that greatly exceeds that of cell phones and approaches or matches that of traditional phones. Keep in mind that the call quality for VoIP providers who do not manage their IP networks and depend on the Internet for routing will yield varying and sometimes disappointing voice quality and unreliable connections.

Can I Use My Computer While I Talk on the Phone?
Yes, depending on your VoIP service provider a router may be required.

Top

Can I Take My Phone Adapter With Me When I Travel?
You may be able to use your VoIP service wherever you travel as long as you have a high-speed Internet connection available. In that case it would work the same as from your home or business.

Top

Can I take my phone number with me?
Most providers allow number portability so you can use the same number which is given by your traditional phone provider. For first time users, however, may want to switch over to VoIP as an alternative service at first, besides a more reliable regular phone service.

Top

Does My Computer Have To Be Turned On?
Not if you are making calls with a phone and adaptor or special VoIP IP phone, but your broadband Internet connection needs to be active. You can also use your computer while talking on the phone.

Top

How Do I Know If I have a VoIP Phone Call?
Your phone will ring just like it does now.

Top

How many phones can I hook up to the ATA device?
Most ATA devices have two phone jacks which allow you to connect two regular corded or cordless phones.

Top

Are there any taxes and fees?
While each company may charge a federal access fee, taxes and fees are significantly lower than traditional lines.

Top

Can I use VoIP service with my home alarm system?
Yes, you can. But we recommend that you keep a basic telephone line to support your home alarm system. Normally the cost of basic service is $9 US per month.

I thought internet based phone (VoIP) calls would be free?
In theory, calls made completely through the internet have little or no cost. But, as many people have realized, it’s not practical to call another computer. Almost everyone still uses landline or cellular phones to receive incoming calls, which means these services, have to complete the call through a traditional phone network. Therefore, the VoIP company has to pay termination charges to the phone company.

Top

Do I get charges for long distance service?
It depends on what country you contact. Most countries are free to contact using a VoIP telephone. However, some country's governments have now begun to charge for incoming and outgoing VoIP telephone calls. Before VoIP telephones, these governments were receiving money from the landline providers as taxes or surcharges. Since more and more people are using VoIP, some of these governments are not receiving as much, so they decided to implement taxes on VoIP telephone calls to make up the difference.

How secure is a VoIP telephone?
Although the medium likes to play up future security threats in VoIP, so far, documented instances of VoIP security breaches have been rare Also, the recently introduced encryption for VoIP subscriber units laid to rest many VoIP security questions.

Top

How is voice quality?
VoIP voice quality has dramatically improved over the past few years to have reached the level of a landline phone and sometimes even superior to it. However, it differs from provider to provider and also depends on the speed of your broadband connection. You may consult other users of a provider (see: user reviews) before signing up.

Top

Can I get an area code other than mine?
Yes, your VoIP service provider may permit you to select an area code different from the area in which you live. This means, if you live in Los Angeles and get a New York number, you will NOT incur long-distance charges while calling a New York number regardless of geography. It also means that your "local" calls, in LA, will be charged long distance and that your friends in LA will incur long-distance charges calling your New York Number.

Top

Can I try a service for a limited period?
Yes, many VoIP service providers offer no conditions 15 to 30-day money back guarantee so you could always try a service without risk to see if it answers your needs. There are usually no binding contracts.

How do VoIP Service Providers Compare?
This is an important question to ask. There are several VoIP Service Providers out there and they are increasing every week. Most VoIP service providers have a selection of plans to choose from and provide various different features, at various different costs. For a list of VoIP service providers that best suit your needs, check out our search engine on the Plan Search page. Also, check out the VoIP Reviews page for links to user reviews of VoIP Service Providers.

How do I get started?
You first need to determine which plans are available in your area and then select one you like best. You can start by searching for plans from our search tool. You can also visit our list of top providers for a service that meets your needs.

There are mainly two kinds of VoIP service providers. Those that offer phone based services such as Vonage, Sun Rocket etc and those that offer computer to computer based services such as Skype, Net2Phone, etc. Each phone based provider has different phone plans suited to different requirements.

Since most computer to computer based services are limited to their own subscriber base (their basic service does not let you call any phone) we predominantly offer listing of phones based VoIP plans. You can compare different plans available for your area and select the one that suits your needs. Compare VoIP service providers plans.
